Members of the Comox Valley have been supporting Glacier View Lodge since the 1940’s when the concept of creating a home for seniors was proposed by the North Island Women’s Institute. In the 1950’s community members built the original Glacier View Home and many ladies provided transport and meals for the builders. Our Auxiliary has its roots in these original volunteers.
On May 12, 1982, seven ladies commenced with a great deal of courage and hope to officially form the Auxiliary for the new Glacier View Lodge. The President was Nancy Franklin, whose husband was the first Chairman of the Board for the Glacier View Lodge Society. The first secretary was Marjie Durrant; she is still active on the Auxiliary today. The first Treasurer was Eileen Turnbull. She later served on the Board of Directors. The Comox and District Women’s Institute donated the start up budget of $495.53.
The mandate of the Glacier View Lodge Auxiliary has remained constant through the years. Their goal is to raise funds in order to provide comforts for the residents of Glacier View Lodge. In addition to fundraising, Auxiliary members provide helping hands for special events, visit residents on their birthdays, and organize special events such as the Bazaar and Christmas party.
Examples of projects:
Funding the annual vehicle insurance for the Lodge van.
Filling the stockings at Christmas time.
Welcome gifts for new residents and recognition with a visit and flower on birthdays.
Supporting special programs such as Music Therapy and Transitional Care.
Upkeep and repairs to garden benches
Purchase equipment such as blanket warmers, specialized mobility devices, and audio-visual equipment.
An annual membership fee of $10 maintains the Auxiliary’s connection to the BC Association of Healthcare Auxiliaries and individual membership in the Glacier View Lodge Society.
